Traffic Control Center / Intelligent Traffic Systems
Johns Creek Traffic Control Center
The City of Johns Creek has developed one of the most advanced Intelligent Traffic Systems (ITS) in the country. The City’s synchronized signal timing system uses sophisticated software to help balance traffic flow throughout the city. ITS ties 80 traffic signals in five separately coordinated systems, which are each uniquely timed, to a Traffic Control Center (TCC) at City Hall.
Flashing Yellow Arrows
How do Flashing Yellow Arrow lights work? Solid red arrow: Stop. No left turns allowed. Solid Yellow: Prepare to stop. Flashing Yellow: Left turns are allowed, but first yield to oncoming traffic and pedestrians. Solid green: Protected left turn. Proceed with caution.
HAWK Light
A High-Intensity Activated Crosswalk, also known as a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon, helps pedestrians cross the street safely by alerting drivers when to slow down, stop, and wait before proceeding through the intersection.
Traffic Calming
To provide a consistent approach and add clarity to the process to address speeding in neighborhoods, the City of Johns Creek adopted a Traffic Calming Policy.
Key features of the policy include:
- establishing thresholds of utilizing traffic calming devices.
- creating a process by which the City would survey owners and residents to determine support for installation of traffic calming devices.
Fiber Connectivity
The new ITS project installs segments of fiber and delivers other upgrades throughout the City, creating redundancy and increasing reliability for instances and occasions when construction or unanticipated work disrupts the main fiber loops connecting the City’s traffic signal system.
The City utilizes an advanced Intelligent Traffic System to synchronize traffic signal timing system for the City’s traffic signals. The entire system relies on a fiber backbone connecting back to the Traffic Control Center at City Hall.
The Old Alabama Road fiber connectivity project was completed in 2023.
