Macedonia Cemetery

City Hall

The Macedonia Methodist African Church Cemetery is a meaningful historic place – an enduring reminder of the area’s earliest families, faith traditions, and community roots. The cemetery connects today’s residents with the people who lived, worked, and worshiped here generations ago.

About the Cemetery

Macedonia Cemetery is located on the east side of Medlock Bridge Road, near the intersection of State Bridge Road and Medlock Bridge Road, just north of Club Corners Car Wash. The approximately 1.92-acre site is the final resting place for African Americans from the early 1900s, including individuals who were formerly enslaved and first- and second-generation descendants of enslaved people from local farms. The property was also once home to the Macedonia Methodist African Church and holds significant cultural and historical importance.

The church building is no longer standing but is believed to have been located in the northwestern quadrant of the property.

As part of the acquisition of the property in 2021, the City completed a site survey and an initial site study to confirm the presence of marked and unmarked graves in the northeastern portion of the property.

In 2022, the City conducted a master plan for Macedonia Cemetery to identiy potential next steps to preserve and protect the property.

In 2023, the master plan was incorporated as part of the Recreation & Parks Strategic Plan and formally adopted. Following the recommendations of the master plan, in 2024, the City secured permanent access to the landlocked site in addition to the easement along a gravel service road used for ongoing maintenance.

In 2025, the City hired a consultant to conduct ground penetrating radar (GPR) for the entire property. The study will confirm the marked burial sites and locate potential unmarked burial sites, further supporting long-term preservation efforts.
