When was the last time you checked to make sure the smoke detectors in your home or business work properly?

If you have questions about your smoke detectors, the Johns Creek Fire Department is available to help. Upon request, Johns Creek firefighters will visit your home and look for obvious fire hazards.

Installation

Install at least one smoke detector on every level of your home, including the attic and basement. It is also recommended to install one in every bedroom to wake you up if a fire starts while you are sleeping.

Be sure your smoke detectors are near bedrooms and other sleeping areas of your home. Regardless of the size of your house or apartment there should be no less than two smoke detectors in every home.

Testing

Battery-operated detectors should be tested once a month to make certain they are working:  Push in the button and holding it in until it beeps.

Tip: Test your batteries every month at the same time you change your A/C filters.

Changing Batteries

Replace batteries and vacuum the vents at least once a year, ideally twice a year, when you change your clocks for daylight savings time.

Replacement

Replace your smoke detectors every ten years. After ten years, the detectors have worked consecutively for 87,000 hours. No other appliance in your home works this long. If you don’t know how old it is, replace it as soon as possible.
