During Diwali, a Hindu festival of Lights, the Johns Creek Fire Department offers some tips to help ensure safe celebrations.
An increased fire risk is present during the celebration of Diwali, which takes place this week.
The Johns Creek Fire Department offers the following guidelines for residents who celebrate Diwali:
- Always place candles firmly in a proper holder to prevent them from falling over and extinguish them when you leave the area.
- Keep candles out of reach of small children and pets.
- Keep candles at least 3 feet away from any combustible materials (ribbons, decorations, etc.)
- Never leave food that you are cooking unattended.
- If you are planning on using fireworks during your celebration, please use extreme caution.
- The use of fireworks has to be in compliance with HB727 and city ordinance. (Fireworks can be used/ignited any day until 9 p.m. After 9 p.m., the use of fireworks is limited to being lawfully present pursuant to the city’s noise ordinance.)
- You can only use fireworks that are lawful in Georgia.
- Fireworks should only be used outdoors, and in open areas away from other homes, structures, and other combustible areas.
- Afterwards, carefully place all used fireworks in a bucket of water to make sure that they are completely extinguished before placing them in the trash.
- Sky lanterns are prohibited.
