Completion is three years away but initial work on the long awaited widening of McGinnis Ferry Road at Johns Creek's northern border began the first week of August.

Construction workers started the $39.4 million project to widen the 2-lane road to 4 lanes by clearing along the right of way between Kemp Road and Blackstone Way. Clearing along the intersection with Sargent will be next and continue eastward for 5.24 miles up to the Chattahoochee.
The state-funded project – scheduled for completion by July 31, 2010 – includes a median, sidewalks on both sides of the road and a replacement bridge over Johns Creek at West Johns Crossing.
In a separate 2-year project, GDOT plans to replace the 2-lane Chattahoochee River Bridge with a 4-lane bridge and 20-foot raised median.
Construction on this bridge replacement project will probably be let in late summer 2008, according to GDOT, which is currently in negotiations with the Federal Highway Administration and the National Park Service regarding environmentally-sensitive issues at the bridge.
