City Council

As established by the City Charter, the City Council of Johns Creek is composed of the Mayor and six (6) Council Members vested with the legislative authority of the city's municipal government.

The City Council carries out its duties in accordance with the City Code and the laws of the state of Georgia.

As the legislative branch, the City Council is primarily responsible for making laws which govern the City of Johns Creek and proposes, debates, and votes on legislation governing and/or affecting the city.

The City Council also regulates revenues and expenditures, incurs debt and approves the final operating and capital budgets for the city.

Council Members are elected to Posts 1-6, which are not geographically designated as districts traditionally are. Therefore, each Johns Creek Council Member represents the city at-large.

Each Council Member serves a term of 4 years. By law, a Council Member must be: 21 years of age; a resident of the City for 12 months immediately preceding his or her election; continue to reside within the city during their time of service on Council; registered and qualified to vote in municipal elections of Johns Creek.

Municipal Elections

Municipal elections for Mayor and City Council are held and conducted in accordance with Chapter 2 of Title 21 of the O.C.G.A., the "Georgia Election Code."

Candidates for Mayor and City Council run at-large and are voted on by the registered voters of the entire city, not by districts or posts or any geographic designation.

The election for the first Johns Creek Mayor and City Council was a special election held November 2006, preceding the City's December 1, 2006 incorporation.

For that special election, the Mayor and Council members for Posts 1, 3, and were elected for initial terms of office, expiring December 31, 2009. The Council members elected to Council Posts 2, 4, and 6 were elected for terms, which expired December 31, 2007.

The successors to the first Mayor and Council members and future successors are elected at the municipal election immediately preceding the expiration of the respective terms of office and take office on the first day of January immediately following their election for terms of four years and until their successors are elected and qualified.

Johns Creek municipal elections are nonpartisan and are held without primaries.
